Is the Schwinn Airdyne Upright Bike a Waste of Money?

!±8± Is the Schwinn Airdyne Upright Bike a Waste of Money?

I bought this Schwinn Airdyne upright bike almost 20 years ago. I had used one before, since my dad had an even older one. Look, I really would like to get a newer bike. But how can you justify that when this thing works so well and just goes on and on? Here's the deal...

1. Simple construction

There isn't much to tear up. This bike is light on electronics and that's one reason it's almost trouble free. That does mean computer power is light compared to some newer designs. That's not all bad though. There are many advantages to this model, like...

2. Comfort seating...

It's not a recumbent, but don't be fooled. It's still a very comfortable ride. Why with that big padded seat, you may ride longer than you think you can. The seat's tough too. Mine still looks almost good as new...

3. A fun to ride exercise bike?

A dual action bike keeps riding interesting. That's because you can mix it up. Pump with your arms and legs or just arms or just legs. It's a great way to fight boredom...

4. That fan

The resistance is created by turning the big fan. That kicks up quite the breeze. Faster you pedal and pump, faster the fan turns and the more resistance. The fan makes a lot of noise, but it's just wind noise. There's no banging and knocking noise.

5. Solid...

This is a solid machine. It's all heavy duty and built to last. Here's the thing... It's so well built that it's a very stable platform. So? That means it just cries out for hard riding. You can hammer this bike and there's no flexing and swaying. It's rock solid...

6. How about circuit workouts?

You can loaf along and get a good workout. But for real progress, you can devise circuit workouts. You can vary the pace and tempo of pedaling. You can also get off the bike and do a set of exercises and then hop back on. This bike takes the roughest use in stride.

7. No more sales for Schwinn...

I guess Schwinn rarely sells a second one to anyone... Know why? You can't wear out the first one! You probably will only need one of these machines.

If there's a classic exercise machine, The Schwinn Airdyne upright bike is probably it. Well built, so it's tough and fun to use. It's not the cheapest bike to buy, but it's a real deal when you see the quality...

About Exercise Bikes
Despite the competition from trendy new fitness inventions, exercise bikes continue to be popular options for home exercise. They offer the same aerobic benefits of riding a bicycle at any time, in any weather, without leaving the comfort and safety of home. Exercise bikes don't take up much space, require little or no balance or coordination, and can provide an effective workout for all levels of users, from beginners to serious competitors. While the same could be said for a number of other types of home fitness equipment, the exercise bike is one of the few that allows you to watch television or read a magazine while you work out. For many people, having convenient access to quality exercise equipment is critical to sticking with a long-term exercise program.

Exercise Bike Equipment Choices

!±8± Exercise Bike Equipment Choices

Exercise bike equipment can be a great investment for improving your health and fitness. A good workout just makes you feel better and the right equipment is fun to use. Choose an exercise bike that feels right and you'll enjoy riding. Equipment that doesn't fit correctly or is in any way irritating will be a constant aggravation.

Electronics

Exercise bikes come in several types and all kinds of price ranges. The electronics which include programmable ride simulations and video displays affects the price quite a bit. You can get built in heart rate monitors and many other electronic options.

Upright or Recumbent

Another basic choice in bikes is whether you prefer an upright bike or a recumbent one. The recumbent bike puts you in a sitting position which minimizes the stress to the knees. But it's difficult to vary your position on a recumbent, so you're pretty well stuck in one spot. The upright bikes let you shift around some, but may stress the knees more. Plus the seat on an upright is very important. Especially if you do long workout, a seat can cause muscle problems in the hips since you're putting weight on the muscles that are doing a lot of the work of pedaling.

Resistance Type

The system used to provide resistance to pedaling varies in bikes. Standard in most bikes now is a magnetic resistance system. Most are electric systems, either plug-in or battery powered. Also sometimes the magnetic resistance is generated by the pedaling. Check the warranty for the resistance system since this is a major part of the bike. Years ago, resistance for exercise bikes was often just a friction band but most of these bikes are gone. Another older system is the one where you turn a fan with your pedals creating more resistance the faster you pedal. This reliable design is still found in the Schwinn Airdyne.

Special Purpose

You can also get a dual action exercise bike which works your legs and your arms at the same time. Another type of machine for people unable to use their legs lets you pedal only with your arms for a workout.

There is no reason to buy the most expensive multi-thousand dollar machine for home use. But don't pay too little and get low quality exercise equipment that you won't use. If possible try out a machine like you are considering and make sure you like the fit and function.

Exercise bike equipment is a long term investment that can help you feel better and improve your overall fitness.
